The mom didn’t know what to make of the situation. She was tired and constantly worried. She’d check her daughter for marks on her skin each time after her father-in-law left.

Flannel and jeans molded to his frame delicately, and a warm, radiant smile shone on his face as he asked for her name. To her surprise, he got the pronunciation right.

He made her laugh and showed her around town. By the end of their encounter, it was clear she’d found someone special.

But although Grace enjoyed her first encounter with Shane Finnely, she couldn’t have imagined that she’d build a life with him. She’d rarely gone for loud, brawny, outdoorsy men like him.

She loved her men cool and collected and in suits, behind desks, not in dirt bikes and the plains breaking horses. She wasn’t even sure Shane broke horses, although he sure looked like he did.

That thought alone, indicating that she didn’t know much about him, made her decide she needed to give him a fair chance.

Ten Dates Rolled Into One

She accepted when he called and invited her out. She’d expected him to take her to a ranch or a picnic on some riverside.

But he took her on the ride of her life, bouncing her across all the beautiful venues around town.

From small diners to carnival rides and the movies, Shane made sure that one date day felt like a ten rolled into one. But the date was more than just the venues he took Grace to.

The Perfect Man

What shone the most about the dates was how considerate, gentle, and funny Shane was.

He constantly protected Grace from the crowds, using his body to shield hers.

She’d melted when she realized how perfectly she had disappeared into his tall, burly frame. Their bodies were the perfect physical fit. He made her feel protected and appreciated and displayed an intelligence that had her hooked. There was no way she would ever let him go.

Meeting His Family

Grace accepted a second date. Then came a third, fourth, and fifth. Before she knew it, she was dressed in a beautiful light pink saree and simple jewelry, standing next to Shane as his father walked toward them.

She bowed respectfully as this was the father of the man she loved, a respected man of power and means.

But even though he shook her hand and welcomed her into his house, she could sense he wasn’t that fond of her.

Andrew Finnely Maloy

Shane’s dad, Andrew Finnely Maloy, was a ranch owner who looked every bit as imposing as one would expect a father-in-law to be.

His dark blonde hair and thick beard were dusted generously with flecks of grey, and his eyes seemed to stare straight into Grace’s soul.

As the most senior elder in the room, Grace walked to him first. Holding a smile, she gently bowed and introduced herself, making sure she was respectful yet dignified. With every fiber in her being, she hoped that tonight would go well.

Grace was here for one thing: Andrew’s blessing.

As the family’s firstborn, Shane had much riding on his shoulders. Andrew explained that he was the face of the family, and people would expect things of him everywhere he went.

Such things included the wife who walked by his side. Andrew explained what he expected of a daughter-in-law.

Grace listened carefully. But with every word that left the older man’s mouth, she realized he was describing the exact opposite of who she was.

Grace was devastated when she unraveled the mystery. Andrew didn’t consider her wife material for his son. In fact, he didn’t want her anywhere close to Shane.

Although he didn’t say it directly, she could tell that he’d already judged and deemed her unworthy.

He’d already shot her leg before she could even join the race. He should have known that love always triumphs.

Love Triumphs

Grace and Shane returned to town, and to her surprise, Shane was beyond frothing with anger.

“I will not stand for this,” he growled, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the steering wheel. “I won’t stand idly while he disrespects you like that, darlin’.”

“It’s okay,” Grace tried to say soothingly. But Shane’s mind was made up. He’d drop Grace home and drive back to have a word with his father.

On One Knee

As promised, Shane did so, and when he returned the following day, he got on one knee the moment Grace opened the door for him.

“This ring was my ma’s,” he explained with glossy eyes. “Grace Arya Bakshi, make me the happiest man by accepting this ring and being my wife.”

Grace was stunned. They’d only been dating for a year, yet Shane wanted her to be his forever. He’d always been genuine, kind, supportive, and loving. Would she say yes?

Say ‘Yes’

Grace wanted to say ‘Yes’ with everything she was. But she feared what Andrew might do when he found out.

She still didn’t know what Shane had told him or if the older man finally accepted her. But Shane said one thing that pulled her in.

She always felt like she wasn’t enough and hoped the arrival of Priya would finally make her father-in-law relent. If only she knew how worse things were about to get.

“He loves and respects you.” But why did Grace feel strongly that the problems that made her fear Andrew in the first place were still there?

Grace feared Andrew was doing something wrong to her daughter. But she decided to give Andrew the benefit of the doubt.

Perhaps Priya just needed time to get used to the older man.

The pediatrician had been handling Priya’s schedules ever since she was born and was quite familiar with her physicals.

She greeted Priya with a smile and carried her about, and Priya gave a satisfied coo.

But the excitement died off immediately after the pediatrician started taking her vitals. Her eyes broadened, and she explained that she’d found something in Priya’s body, something that was the cause of all her distress.

“What is it?” Grace asked. But she could see fear linger within the pediatrician’s eyes. The woman knew Andrew; she knew he was a powerful man no one had ever crossed. Her advice was simple: move out.

But she couldn’t see him try to harm Priya in any way. In fact, he was loving and gentle, rocking and trying to soothe her. Grace sat back, trying to piece everything together. None of it made any sense!

A worried Grace set her phone aside. Clearly, Andrew wasn’t doing anything to directly harm the baby. In fact, he was trying to soothe her distress. Grace took a deep breath, still wondering if she was looking too much into this.

Maybe Priya had simply ingested something dangerous. Maybe Andrew had nothing to do with it. But that didn’t explain why the baby always cried whenever she was in the man’s vicinity.

Grace walked out of the room, confused. But just as she was turning the corner, she caught her father-in-law in the act.

Catching Him In The Act

As Grace walked into the room, she couldn’t believe her eyes. There was Andrew, holding little Priya in his arms, smiling as he gently bounced her up and down.
