Jeremy Renner Accident: Snowplow Injury, Statements, More


Marvel star Jeremy Renner experienced “extensive” injuries following a snowplow accident. Renner underwent surgery on January 2, 2023, and was “in critical but stable condition” after the procedure.

He broke his silence the following day, taking to social media to thank fans and family for their kind words and prayers. “I’m too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all,” the Marvel actor wrote on January 3 alongside a selfie showing damage to the side of his face.

On January 21, 2023, Jeremy claimed he had more than 30 broken bones, he’s healing his mental health.

What Happened to Jeremy Renner?

One of Renner’s Reno, Nevada, neighbors, told TMZ that the actor, 52, was using a “plowing machine — called a Snowcat,” which “accidentally ran over one of Jeremy’s legs, and he was losing a lot of blood from the injury.”

A press release from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in Reno, Nevada, confirmed that they responded to a “traumatic injury” at 9:00 a.m. on January 1, 2023, “in the area of Mt. Rose Highway.”

The statement continued, “Upon arrival, Deputies coordinated with Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and REMSA Health to arrange for medical transport of Mr. Jeremy Renner via care flight to a local area hospital.”

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office noted that Renner was “the only involved party in the incident.” The office’s “Major Accident Investigation Team is currently looking into the circumstances of the incident.”

Following his arrival at the hospital on January 1, 2023, his rep released a statement to Deadline that said the Hurt Locker star was in “critical but stable condition with injuries suffered after experiencing a weather-related accident while plowing snow,” adding that he was receiving “excellent care.”

What Were Jeremy Renner’s Injuries?

On January 2, 2023, Renner underwent surgery following the incident.

“We can confirm that Jeremy has suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries and has undergone surgery today, January 2nd 2023. He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition,” his rep told People in a second statement. “Jeremy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families. They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”

According to a 911 call log from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, which was obtained by CNN, Renner experienced “serious bleeding” after he was “completely crushed” from the Snowcat vehicle. The call noted that the actor had “extreme [difficulty] breathing” amid the incident and reveled that “the right side of his chest is collapsed” and his “upper torso is crushed.”

Jeremy made his first late night show appearance on April 10, 2023, stopping by Jimmy Kimmel Live. He was able to walk on stage with the help of a cane and detailed how he was extraordinarily lucky when it came to his injuries. The Snowcat “just missed every vertebrae, did not hit any organs,” he explained, adding, “My brain did not swell.”

“My eye did pop out. That’s weird. But I got pretty lucky that none of the organs got messed up,” he revealed.

What Did Jeremy Renner Say About His Accident?

Aside from his brief social media update from January 3, 2023, Renner hasn’t shared extensive details about the accident. However, he shared a “thank you” note to his doctors and an update on his condition via his Instagram Stories on January 6, 2023. 

“Thank you, renowned medical ICU team for beginning this journey,” the Hawkeye actor wrote across a photo of him in his hospital bed surrounded by medical staff.

On January 16, 2023, the actor shared photos of his Reno home covered in snow. “Missing my happy place,” Renner wrote on Instagram Stories. “It’s a rough ride over the pass.”

Hours later, however, he updated fans in a Twitter post revealing that he had been released from the hospital.

Outside my brain fog in recovery, I was very excited to watch episode 201 with my family at home,” referring to the second season premiere of his Paramount+ show Mayor of Kingstown.

How Is Jeremy Renner Doing Now?

While the Hurt Locker star is recovering, he opened up about the long journey ahead of him in a lengthy January 21, 2023, Instagram post, featuring a photo of him in a hospital bed. 

“Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years,” Jeremy wrote. “Spawned from tragedy for my entire family and quickly focused into uniting actionable love. I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I. Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30-plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all.” 

Jeremy gave his first interview about the accident to ABC News’ Diane Sawyer on April 6, 2023. The actor revealed, “If I was there on my own, It would have been a horrible way to die. And surely, I would have. Surely,” before thanking his nephew for saving his life. “But I wasn’t alone, it was my nephew, sweet Alex and the rest of the cavalry came.”

The extent of his pain and injuries was so severe he began writing goodbye notes to his family on his phone in case he died. “So, I’m writing down notes on my phone, and last words to my family,” Jeremy explained while teary-eyed.

Ultimately, he was able to joke about surviving the near-fatal accident, telling Sawyer, “I’ve lost a lot of flesh and bone, but I have been refueled and refilled with love – and titanium.”

In May 2023, Jeremy shared a video of himself hitting the gym on his road to recovery, saying he “decided to push through the pain of progress.”

“Take the new parts for a tiny test drive. The body is miraculous,” he added alongside the clip shared via Instagram. “Even though I feel like the Tin Man, needing oil for all my new joints (hips, knees, ankles, tibia etc). Encouraged after this warm up to press on (don’t tell my PT).”

Eleven months after the accident, Jeremy revealed he has “been exploring EVERY type of therapy since Jan 14th.”

“Countless hours of physical therapy, peptide injections, iv drips and pushes, stem cell and exosomes, red light / IR therapy, hyperbaric chamber 2.0 atmospheres, cold plunge, and the list goes on and on,” he wrote via Instagram on November 7, 2023. “…. BUT My greatest therapy has been my mind and the will to be here and push to recover and be better …. Be exceptional … I feel it’s my duty to do so. Not to squander my life being spared , but to give back to my family, friends, and all of you whom have empowered me to endure. I thank you all.”

On May 22, 2024, Jeremy appeared on Good Morning America to give fans an update on how he’s feeling over a year since the accident.

“I’m feeling pretty great. I’m feeling pretty strong,” Jeremy said. “Starting the season this year at the beginning of the year was a little dicey, strength-wise, but by the end of it, usually you’re pretty shattered energy-wise, but I feel pretty strong.”
