Who Is Guy Gansert? Meet ER Doctor on Golden Bachelorette
Guy Gansert got a rose from Joan Vassos after their first one-on-one date on The Golden Bachelorette. However, some other information also came out about Guy as the show was airing. After Joan broke up with Guy during the November 2024 season finale, fans are wondering what he’s up to today.
What Is Guy Gansert’s Job?
Guy works as an emergency room doctor in Nevada. He works for Northern Nevada Emergency Physicians, according to his LinkedIn. He previously served as the Chief of Staff at Renown Medical Center from 2005 until 2007 and as the Medical Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Renown Regional Emergency Room from 1994 until 2005.
The Reno, Nevada, resident has been working for 40 years. He went to med school at the University of Nevada, Reno, School of Medicine and then specialized in Emergency Medicine at the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine.
In addition to his work as a doctor, Guy is also passionate about hiking and often shares photos of his travels on social media. He planned to hike Mount Kilimanjaro in the fall of 2024, but was sidelined by a knee injury.
Who Is Guy Gansert’s 1st Wife?
Before appearing on The Golden Bachelorette, Guy was married to his first wife, Heidi Gansert. She is a Republican politician in Nevada who has been serving for the state Senate since 2016. However, she has opted not to run for her seat again in the 2024 election.
Guy and Heidi were still together in 2017, as a profile in the Nevada Independent discussed their relationship and confirmed that they had been married for over 30 years. It’s unclear when they split, but Guy opened up about the divorce while on his one-on-one date with Joan.
“You sure do not expect a marriage to end after 34 years,” Guy admitted. “I think we fell in love, we got married, and then when our youngest went away, all of a sudden we were semi-empty nesters. And I thought we had a really good marriage for about 30 years, but when we would talk, I think that we didn’t have open, honest communication sometimes. We spent 30 years trying not to hurt each other’s feelings, you now? I wasn’t happy. We went to some couple’s counseling and she just said, ‘OK, I’m done.’”
Guy admitted that he began “withdrawing” from his loved ones after the split. “I didn’t want to go out, I didn’t want to see anybody,” he shared. “The kids came to me and said how much they loved me and how much they appreciated me and they just really wanted me to be happy.”
Does Guy Gansert Have Kids?
Guy is a proud dad of four children, according to his ABC bio. He also has one grandchild named Idan through his oldest daughter MacKenzie, who works as a lawyer in Atlanta.
Guy has shared some information about his children on social media. In May 2024, he gushed about Mackenzie after she ran the Boston marathon. “She completed it in sweltering heat(for marathons) and being 8 months postpartum while working 50+ hours a week for a corporate law firm,” Guy bragged. “I must give her a shout out for being an amazing wife, mother, daughter, woman, human!”
In September 2023, he honored his two sons by posting, “Happy National Son’s Day to my two boys, Glenn and Hank, who are rocking life ! I couldn’t be more proud.”
In 2021, he documented a trip to England with daughter Kirsten, including Instagram posts. “This flight and bus ride out to Oxford University couldn’t have been better,” he wrote in one caption. “I was engulfed in smoke free perfect weather as Kirsten and I roamed the streets of Jericho District. Of course I had to have classic English Pub food, Fish and Chips and a Pint. I’m just ecstatic being [able] to see and experience this special time.”
Guy Gansert’s Ex-Wife Filed for a Restraining Order Against Him
In October 2024, The Sun reported that Guy’s ex-wife filed for a “protection order against domestic violence” against him. “After disparaging me for some time and my now-boyfriend, he pointed his finger like a gun then ‘shot’ at me,” she claimed in her October 2021 court filing. “He motioned like he was going to shoot me with his hand shaped like a pistol.”
The ex also claimed that this was not the first time that Guy had threatened her and alleged that he used to send her “stacks of text messages,” in which she said he would “flip to anger” quickly.
She filed for a temporary restraining order but eventually decided not to pursue action ahead of a scheduled hearing in November 2021, so the protection order was not granted.
When Guy was cast on The Golden Bachelorette, he and his ex filed to have the records about the protective order sealed. “Based on my participation in this show and the audience viewership, I have a grave and ever-increasing concern that the substance of the underlying case may be publicly exposed and thus create unnecessary exposure, harassment, embarrassment, and potentially personal harm to myself … my children and grandchild, and extended family,” Guy explained. However, the request was denied, according to The Sun.
After news of the restraining order was made public, Guy addressed the situation in an Instagram statement.
“I would like to respond to articles about a personal matter from 2021,” he wrote. “This was an unfortunate situation that occurred during an incredibly stressful time for me and my former spouse and was ultimately resolved when she voluntary [sic] dismissed her request for a protective order. Together we crafted a resolution that was agreeable to both parties. My ex-wife and I recently asked the court to seal her application for the protective order as we had hoped to maintain privacy for our family. But I know that with being in the public eye comes responsibility.”
He continued, “My ex-wife and I were married for 34 years and in that time had four children who we raised together and deeply love. They are my greatest accomplishment. My divorce was extremely difficult for me and led me to a very low point in my life and as a result I acted in a way that does not represent who I am. The past few years have caused me to conduct a deep personal evaluation and I will always continue to work to improve myself.”
To conclude his message, Guy said, “I am so appreciative of The Golden Bachelorette and Bachelor Nation as well as my family, who have been exceptionally supportive during the most difficult times of my life. I am eternally grateful for them.”

Guy Gansert Is Making His Acting Debut on ‘General Hospital’
Four months after season 1 of The Golden Bachelorette came to an end, it was announced in March 2025 that Guy is taking his turn at acting and will appear on ABC’s General Hospital as wildlife journalist Geoffrey. His debut episode will air on March 12, 2025.
Guy explained that he got the job after he jokingly told Bachelor franchise producers that he would like a chance to be on “such a well-respected long running series,” which he used to watch in college.
“Having had absolutely no acting experience, I said [it] in — kinda — jest,” he told People about the casting. “Within a couple of weeks, I received an email Zoom invitation with [executive producer] Frank Valentini and [Vice President, Production & Administration, ABC Daytime, Disney ABC Television Group] Dominick Nuzzi. After a 30-minute Zoom interview, they loved the idea of a real ER doctor who made it to the final two of The Golden Bachelorette. A month later, I received an offer to be on a small one-day episode.”
Guy said he “responded in the affirmative immediately” to the offer. “Even though I was ecstatic over being a cast member on The Golden Bachelorette, this was an exciting opportunity to actually act and be a part of an iconic show,” he said. “This is all happening after deciding to hang up my stethoscope and retire after 35 years.”
He went on to recall his experience on set of the soap opera, sharing that it was “surreal.”
“The producers, directors, actresses were so incredibly kind and supportive and put me at ease,” Guy gushed. “They were all welcoming. There was definitely a sense of family amongst all staff. It was one of the most fun things I have done. They made me feel special.”
