Are Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall Friends?

The two actresses are not close, and have gone back and forth over the years on where their relationship stands. Sarah and Kim costarred together on SATC from 1998 through 2004, and starred in the two films based on the series in 2008 and 2010.

Rumors of a feud began in 2016 when Kim turned down appearing in a third SATC film.

In 2017, the How I Met Your Father star slammed reports that her alleged “diva” demands were behind a third Sex and the City movie not getting made while shading SJP.

“It’s quite extraordinary to get any kind of negative press about something that I’ve been saying for almost a year of ‘no’ that I’m demanding or a diva. The answer was always no and a respectful, firm, no,” Kim told Piers Morgan.

“And this is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker in that I think she could have been nicer,” she added.

Kim Cattrall Called Sarah Jessica Parker ‘Cruel’

Kim infamously railed against her former costar in 2018 after the death of her brother, Chris Cattrall.

Sarah left a message in the comments of the England native’s post announcing the heartbreaking news, writing, “Dearest Kim, my love and condolences to you and yours and Godspeed to your beloved brother. Xx.”

The Glamorous star shared an Instagram post on February 10, 2018, reading “I don’t need your love and support at this tragic time @sarahjessicaparker.”

“My Mom asked me today ‘When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?’” Kim wrote in the caption.

“Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona,” she added.

SJP told Vulture in April 2018 that the apparent bad blood wasn’t what it seemed.

“I’d just like to remind everybody that there is no catfight. I have never uttered an unkind, unsupportive, unfriendly word, so I would love to redefine it,” the Hocus Pocus star said. “I’ve always held Kim’s work in high regard and always appreciative of her contributions. If she chooses not to do the third movie, there’s not a lot I can do to change her mind and we must respect it.”

Kim Cattrall Wasn’t Asked Back as a Regular on ‘And Just Like That’

“I was never asked to be part of the reboot. I made my feelings clear after the possible third movie, so I found out about it like everyone else did — on social media,” Kim told Variety in May 2022 about playing Samantha Jones in the SATC revival. She added with subtle shade about AJLT, “The series is basically the third movie. That’s how creative it was.”

Sarah confirmed that Kim wasn’t asked to reprise the part, despite SATC costars Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis returning.

“We did not ask her to be part of this because she made it clear that that wasn’t something she wanted to pursue, and it no longer felt comfortable for us, and so it didn’t occur to us,” Sarah — who was an executive producer on both shows — said on The Hollywood Reporter‘s “Award Chatter” podcast in June 2022, referring to how Kim had previously said she was done playing Samantha as one of the reasons she didn’t want to do a third SATC film.

“That’s not ‘slamming’ her, it’s just learning. You’ve got to listen to somebody, and if they’re publicly talking about something and it doesn’t suggest it’s some place they want to be, or a person they want to play, or an environment in which they want to be, you get to an age where you’re like, ‘Well, we hear that,’” she added.

The character of Samantha was kept alive in season 1 of AJLT through text messages with SJP’s Carrie Bradshaw, who explained in the show’s premiere episode that the characters had a falling out after Carrie let Samantha go as her publicist and she subsequently moved from New York to London.

Kim Cattrall Made a Cameo on ‘And Just Like That’

SATC fans were over the moon when Kim had a change of heart and appeared in the AJLT season 2 finale as Samantha. The actress shared the news she would be returning in a June 1, 2023, Instagram post sharing a photo of her in character with the caption, “Happy Pride.”

In the August 13, 2023, season 2 finale, Samatha was seen calling Carrie from the back of a limousine to let her know she wouldn’t be able to make it to the farewell party at her longtime Upper East Side apartment.

“My flight’s three hours delayed, Carrie! I won’t be able to make it there in time,” Samantha said over the phone. The ladies had a friendly conversation, but never interacted in person as Kim shot the scene separately and was never in the same place as Sarah or And Just Like That executive producer and showrunner Michael Patrick King.
