He thought for a moment before responding. “I’m sorry,” he said as he put the bill in his pocket “But this is staying with me.” That’s when he told her that if she wanted it back, she’d need to do something for him. They receive a “tipped minimum wage,” which amounts to a fraction of the federal minimum wage. Tips are designed to cover the rest of a server’s income, but there is no guarantee that they will.
