Despair

Calming His Thoughts

As Joshua tried to calm his racing thoughts, the officer who had arrived on the scene began organizing the twins to be taken to the hospital for a check-up.

But before they left, Joshua had a strange and unexpected request.

“Can I see your body camera footage?” he asked, his voice shaking slightly as he spoke. It was a long shot, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this than met the eye.

His wife, Jennifer, had already left for the hospital with their twins, leaving Joshua behind to deal with the aftermath of the traumatic event.

But there was something on the footage that the officer must not have noticed with his own eyes.

The footage showed something brown and furry flash into view and into his daughter’s pocket.

Whatever it was, it was now coming along for the ride. He wasn’t hallucinating after all. But then it occurred to him he needed to tell them before it was too late.

Going After Them

He grabbed the phone and desperately called Jennifer, but there was no answer. He decided to get into his car and speed off after them.

Once he arrived at the hospital, his mind raced with all the possibilities of what could have happened to his kids.

Finally, with some direction from a nurse, he found their hospital room and barged in.

A New Friend

But what he saw, he couldn’t believe. The brown creature was sitting on his daughter’s lap. It seemed docile and tame compared to what he had imagined. Then his daughter explained.

“Daddy! Meet my new friend. He saved Jason and I. After we got lost, we camped out in his dam.”

The little girl explained. That’s when it clicked: his resourceful kids used the sticks from the beaver dam to insulate themselves.

A Happy Ending

The beaver didn’t seem to mind either, strangely enough. The family got to leave the hospital after the doctors said that the two kids just needed hydration. Once home, Tilly released the beaver back into the woods.

To ensure nothing like this ever happened again, Joshua created a small path through the forest to the riverbed where his kids could play and never get lost.

As a final precaution, he also accompanied them on all of their adventures. The family was happy again, and he’d never forget the help of the police and the little beaver.
