Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund’s Relationship Timeline

March 20, 2019: Us Weekly reported that Roberts split with on-again, off-again boyfriend and fiancé Evan Peters and started dating Hedlund.

It’s unclear when or how the two stars met.

“Garrett and Emma have been friends, but this is new, casual, and just a couple of weeks old,” a source told the publication.

A source told E! News that Roberts and her “AHS” costar ended their relationship not long after Valentine’s Day. 

E! News also said that at the time, Roberts and the “Triple Frontier” star had “gone on a few casual dates and are exploring a relationship, but it is definitely not anything serious yet.”

Hedlund previously dated “On the Road” costar Kirsten Dunst from 2011 to 2016.

March 31, 2019: Roberts and Hedlund were photographed showing affection while out and about.

In late March 2019, they were pictured holding hands in New York City.

May 6, 2019: Roberts spoke about the difficulties of dating in Hollywood during a cover story for Cosmopolitan.

“I never want to talk about relationships I’m in or that are ending or have ended,” she said in response to the interviewer asking about her split with Peters.

“It’s hard enough to be with someone by yourself, let alone with an audience. Growing up is hard. Sometimes it makes me sad that I can’t have a private moment,” Roberts said.

She added: “Because of Twitter and Instagram, there’s a whole other element where everybody can comment on what you’re doing and no one knows the real story. That’s hard.”

January 2020: A source told Us Weekly that the actors were “having fun and enjoying each other” and not discussing getting engaged or married.

“They like hanging out and going out together, and their relationship is more fun than serious,” the source said. 

At the start of 2020, Roberts and Hedlund were also seen hugging and kissing in Beverly Hills, California. 

June 2020: Us Weekly reported that Roberts and Hedlund were expecting their first child together.

At the time, neither star had publicly commented on their relationship or the pregnancy reports.

Roberts’ mother, Kelly Cunningham, confirmed the news on her Instagram, but the account was deleted shortly after.

Vogue UK went on to refer to Roberts as a “pregnant star” in an interview published in late August about her beauty routine. 

That same month, the couple was also spotted wearing face masks and picking up coffee in Los Angeles.

January 12, 2021: Roberts confirmed that she gave birth to her son, Rhodes Robert Hedlund.

TMZ was the first to report the baby news in late December 2020, followed by E! News. 

Roberts didn’t comment on the birth of her son until the following month, when she posted a photo of herself cradling the newborn with the caption: “Thank you 2020 for getting one thing right ☀️ Our bright light Rhodes Robert Hedlund 🧡.”

February 14, 2021: Roberts posted a black-and-white photo with Hedlund in honor of Valentine’s Day.

“Happy Valentine’s Day my love🌹,” Roberts captioned the image, which showed her head resting on Hedlund’s lap as they looked at each other. 

February 2021: Hedlund revealed that his son’s godfather is country-music star Tim McGraw.

The two met while playing father and son in the 2004 movie “Friday Night Lights.” Six years later, they costarred in the film “Country Strong.”

“He’s somebody that I admire and respect, not only as an amazing father and an amazing husband, amazing musician and amazing actor,” Hedlund said during an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” 

“He’s the best,” he added of the musician, who has three daughters with wife Faith Hill. “After around 12 weeks of Emma being pregnant, I called him, and the first thing he said was, ‘I’m the godfather.’ So, how can you argue?”

February 2021: Hedlund raved about parenthood in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

The actor said that “every day is a blessing” and described his son as “an angel.”

“I like to call this period the precious delirium,” Hedlund said. “Everybody says, ‘Appreciate it. Soak it up. It goes by so fast,’ so I’m really taking that advice and really trying to wallow in it.”

August 2021: Hedlund said that he and Roberts bonded over the Amazon Prime Video show “Modern Love.”

“There were two little plus sides to the pandemic. One was getting to binge-watch ‘Modern Love,’ it was one of my favorite things to watch throughout the whole pandemic,” Hedlund, who appeared on season two of the show, told toofab.

“I mean, never held my gal’s hand tighter or held her closer,” he said. “And we never wanted it to end.”

December 10, 2021: Roberts posted a photo of herself and her baby.

“the best ❤️ ,” the actress captioned the photo, which showed her smiling on a couch while facing her baby. 

December 27, 2021: Roberts celebrated her son’s birthday with a rodeo-themed party.

Roberts posted three photos on Instagram with the caption: “Happy Birthday Rodeo! Frosting in my hair and @thebeatbuds stuck in my head. Loved every second of it ❤️ I love you Rhodes ❤️.”

One image showed her wearing a small cowboy hat, a red-and-white checkered shirt, and blue jeans. The other photos showcased the two cakes that were made for the 1-year-old’s birthday celebration. 

January 21, 2022: Multiple outlets reported that Roberts and Hedlund broke up.

The split was first reported by In Touch, followed by People, Us Weekly, and ET.

People reported that the stars “broke things off a few weeks ago, following a rocky few months in their relationship.”

An anonymous source told the publication that they’re “trying their best to coparent. It’s been hard.”

A source also told ET that the couple “grew apart when Garrett was away working.”
