If you follow Slimming World, you will know that essentially most wines are the same syns so when looking for low syn wine it all comes down to choosing the perfect wine you like and feel is a good spend of your syns. Why buy a bottle which tastes like vinegar or like pop when you can buy something really good? Here I share the syns for wine so you can choose the best low syn alcohol for you!

How many syns are in wine?

I always look at the % vol of wine to see how strong it is, do you? Partly because I hate really weak wines, yes Lambrini I am looking at you, partly because of the differing syn values. Low syn wine should still be nice, shouldn’t it?

Essentially the higher the vol % the higher the syns. Red wine is marginally lower in syns but not by much I am afraid!

For the purposes of this post, I am going to presume that you all drink either a 175ml glass of wine or a 250ml glass. If you drink less you will need to do the maths!

Alcohol-free or very low alcohol wine is always lower syns but in my opinion not anywhere near as nice so definitely not the perfect wine!

Red wine syns

Red wine, for example, a 175ml glass of 10-12% vol wine is 7 syns whereas a 12.5-13.5% is 8 syns. If you choose a 14% or above wine then the same size glass is 9 syns. Not much difference really is there.

For 250ml glasses syns are 10-12% vol 10 syns, 12.5-13.5% vol 11.5 syns, and 14% and above 12.5 syns.

White wine syns

White wine is worked out in a similar way. Firstly for a 175ml glass with 8-10% vol you are looking at 6 syns, for 10.5-12.5% vol it would cost you 7 syns and for 13% vol and above it would be 8.5 syns.

For 250ml glasses of 8-10% vol white wine you would use 9 syns, a glass of wine with 10.5-12.5% vol is 10 syns, for a 13% of high vol wine then you would use 11.5 syns.

Rose wine syns

Rose wine is almost the same as white wine. Firstly for a 175ml glass with 8-10% vol you are looking at 6 syns, for 10.5-12.5% vol it would cost you 7 syns and for 13% vol and above it would be 8.5 syns.

For 250ml glasses of 8-10% vol white wine you would use 9 syns, a glass of wine with 10.5-12.5% vol is 10 syns, for a 13% of high vol wine then you would use 12 syns.

Choosing a great low syn wine

If you know which wines you like then it is always a good idea to try similar ones from the same country or grape. Be brave because you never know as you have got older your tastes are likely to have changed. A red like Diecianni Pimitivo (Zinfandel 2017) is delicious and perfect to try if you like other Italian reds.

On the whole, I would always avoid a reduced wine, unless it is reduced merely because some spilt on the label. The store has stopped doing it for a reason, that reason could be it is disgusting!

An independent wine sellar is always a good start as you know they really know their stuff when it comes to wine. This knowledge base gives you great tips on choosing the right wines for you.

I am loving the white wine range from this site too with this Malvirà Saglietto Arneis 2016 not being something I would have been brave enough to try myself but absolutely perfect for me! I usually never sway from Pinot Grigio as I know I like it but it turns out I like so many others too!

I like to think this is one of the reasons it is great to be 40 as my wine tastes are changing!

What wine do you like? Do you have any low syn wine choices that you would recommend I try?
