Games and activities
I always think great Christmas gifts for families are things they can do together like Christmas Jigsaw Puzzles they don’t have to be boring houses or the same old scene as last year. Wentworth puzzles have amazing wooden puzzles with whimsy pieces such as trees and snowflakes to make it more unique too. This one is called Winter Wonderland and is available in sizes from 40 pieces to 1000 pieces! This 250-piece puzzle is £32.
This is another of the amazing jigsaw puzzles from Wentworth with the photo showing some of the whimsy pieces at the front. This one is called Chocolate Spa and is so cute it would be a perfect gift to do whilst drinking hot chocolate! This one is available in sizes 240 pieces or 500 pieces. This 240-piece puzzle is £32.
These amazing award-winning cards really are great for families with children. There are a huge variety of categories available but my favourite is these Amazing British bugs cards. They are perfect for youngsters with an interest in bugs to learn a little more.
Some of the other varieties of cards have more detail than these for older children too. Each card is double-sided with a different creature on each side and the coloured backgrounds help them to categorise the creatures too. With original detailed illustrations and facts, they are educational but fun too. Check more details about them on the Button and Squirt website where they are £10 a pack.
In this dodgeball card game, the family will go head to head with their opponents collecting cards while throwing and avoiding squishy, adorable Burritos. It can be played as a standalone game, or combined with the cards from Throw Throw Avocado to unlock a new combo game using all four throwables! Available from Exploding Kittens for £18.74.
This Geomag Mechanics Challenge Stroke set is a perfect family activity. It is the sort of thing my son Ben often spends time doing with his dad. It is suitable for ages 8+ and is secretly educational too as a great STEM activity involving gravity, magnets and precision. This set is £49 from Coolshop.
A fun game suitable for children aged 8+ and adults which combines graffiti and Pictionary! The aim of the game is to deface the card by drawing on it (wipeable pen!) to turn it into something completely different! The game is £12.99 from Amazon and made by Tomy.
Have you seen the latest craze of Boxball? It is really fun and basically uses an app along with this headband with an attached ball to safely box for fitness or fun. It is just £22 and available directly from The Boxball.
Would they like a badminton set? Badminton is something they may not have considered but if they are sporty it could be something that they would love. I think it would be better to give to a family with more than one child or a child with local friends, you can’t really play badminton on your own and adults might not want to keep joining in! This set was £50 but is now £39.99 from Badminton HQ.
Monogamy is a great gift for couples with the game being quite intimate and sometimes steamy and kinky things to do together when the kids or in bed or out of the house. You can play with different cards depending on your mood or your interests and see where it takes you as a couple. It is a great gift for a couple who you want to buy a shared gift and is available directly from Monogamy or from Ann Summers, Love Honey or Amazon.
Remember if you are buying monogamy for a couple with curious kids that might understand the game make sure they open it separately!
Zombie Kittens, from the makers of Exploding Kittens, is a great game for players aged 7+. Using the cards they simply draw a card until someone draws an exploding kitten but the game isn’t over then as they may come back to life with a zombie kitten! The game is £19.99 from Exploding Kittens.
Poetry for Neanderthals is another game from the people who make Exploding Kittens so you know it will be good! The aim of the game is to explain words to your opponents by using simple one-syllable words and if you fail you get hit with the inflatable club! The game is suitable for ages 7+ and is just £13.99.
For young E.T fans this Pop-up E.T. game is great. It is a similar game to pop-up pirate but instead with E.T. This is suitable for age 4+ but I think that would be with support from adults so personally I would buy it for a slightly older child so they can play it without needing an adult! It is available from Argos and Amazon for £19.
This is a great family game for families who love the game where you stick a famous person on your opponent’s head with a post-it note! The aim of the game is to guess your opponent’s famous identity whilst using pictogram cards for the questions. The problem being you only have a selection of cards available so you should avoid using them all up in the first round! The game has an RRP of £27 but is currently £25.99 from Zatu Games and is also available from good hobby stores.
Mantis is a quick family card game from the makers of Exploding Kittens. It is perfect for families who love playing games together but don’t always have much time as games can be played in as little as 15 minutes! The aim of the game is to either score points or steal your opponent’s cards to score points! It is suitable for ages 7+ and is just £13.99.
Have you seen the TikTok phenomenon Quoridor? It is basically a game where you have to move your piece across the board whilst also building a maze for your opponents. A game of strategy suitable for ages 8+ that is available from independent hobby stores and is around £35. It is also available on Amazon but keeps selling out! It is currently here in a pack with some other similar games.
Top It is a party game great for families. The aim of the game is to race to place your cones on letter discs whilst calling out examples to teasing topics. The difficulty is that any player can Top It with another answer and place their cone on top of yours, only the last cone counts and bags all the points! This game is ideal for ages 10+ and is £18.19 from Zatu Games.
Uproar! Is a game perfect for any age that can read so maybe 8+ depending on ability or perhaps working in teams would help younger kids join in? The game is based on players each selecting two cards and working out the only matching pair of words then being the first to sound that out eg fireworks would be whoosh bang! The game is small so perfect for them to take on holiday for added fun. It is just £7.19 on Amazon.
Bunch of Butts is a hilarious game of butts. It is a little like snap but with more fun and more butts! A game only lasts around 15 minutes so it is a perfect quick family game and suitable as a gift for anyone over 7. The game is available from Camden Games for £14.99 where you can also watch a video of it being played!
Pear Shaped is a fun game with the aim of matching pairs, dancing a wiggle when the pear stops jiggling and generally having a laugh when it all goes pear-shaped! A great game for ages 7 and above and good for the family to play together. The game is just £14.99 from Camden Games where you can also see a video if I haven’t explained it very well!

Would a meat hamper be the perfect gift? This cured meat bundle is an amazing gift from Crown and Queue, a British Cured Meat company that resurrected traditional and historical recipes to make amazing treats which I believe make amazing gifts. It is a sustainable brand that focuses on quality and even chooses green options for the couriers which I think is fantastic. This is the small gift hamper for £38 but there are many other options available from Crown and Queue.

Chocolates are great gifts for a family to share but instead of buying something boring like a tub of Quality Street, why not buy something special like Lily Obriens chocolates? This Dessert Collection is £9.97 on Amazon but is also available in larger supermarkets.
If you are looking for a bottle of red wine then this bottle from Independent Wine is perfect. Brunello tastes like wild strawberry, raspberry, mint, rich espresso, sweet tobacco and delicate violet flower all in the same glass. Brunello is famous for its incredible ageing potential and can improve for 30 years or more. Tasting Notes: Dark, smooth and seriously slick Brunello. Tannins are grippy but pleasant. For a bit of luxury why not check out the range from Opies? I love the Apricots in Luxardo dark rum but they are all lovely. If they might prefer savoury why not buy the pickled walnuts? These jars are available for around £6.50 in many independent retailers as well as some being available in Ocado, Waitrose, Morrisons, Tesco, Booths and Nisa. For a gift of white wine, I would recommend the Le Morette Mandolara 2020 | Lugana DOC, an award-winning white wine from Lake Garda. Tastes of elderflower, ginger, guava and grapefruit and £18.45 for a bottle from Independent Wines.
A drink that all adult members of the family would enjoy is a lovely gift idea for an adult family or for the adults to share if you are buying for the children. This is one of the amazing gins by J J Whitley (I am a huge gin lover so I may be biased!). This Mango and Papaya gin is available in all good supermarkets and can be found priced anywhere between £13 and £20. Sainsbury’s is the best value I have found at the moment!
Alternatively, if they are vodka drinkers then this Artisanal vodka is a perfect gift and it looks stunning too. This vodka has been filtered through gold thread several times to give it a silkier finish. It is made by J J Whitley who is well known for its amazing gins and vodkas so you really can’t go wrong with this as a gift. For the home or garden
The Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor and table lamp range are stunning and would be a great gift for a family to share. This is the floor lamp which I love. It was so easy to set up and link to my Alexa devices and it is such a great statement piece. The base is available in oak, black or white.
The light can be controlled by voice or by using the app to change it to light up any colour you choose but there are also some amazing presets such as savannah sunset. With the presets, the light changes colours through that range (eg oranges, yellows and reds for the sunset) at a speed to suit you. The Signe floor light is £299.99 and the Signe table lamp is £189.99 and basically the same but smaller!
This Galileo Thermometer from Kikkerland is a great gift for a family for the home. It works by the globes rising according to the room temperature so would be fascinating to people of most ages. I would probably recommend avoiding giving to anyone with toddlers though in case it gets broken! The Galileo Thermometer is available from Amazon for £18.99.
Candles make a lovely gift for a family. Whilst they are not ideal for those with younger children they can be put out of reach and used when they are in bed. These two Christmassy candles from Aroma Energy are £9.99 each. The cinnamon apple one is such a nice fruity scent and the Christmas spice is a bit of a mulled wine type scent.
Smart lightbulbs are a great family gift too and would be ideal for families of any age. If you are buying for an older couple these would be a nice gift too to show them how they do not need to get up to turn their lights on and off! This pair is available from Amazon.
I love feeding the birds in our garden. We have recently had lots of bluetits feeding from the peanuts I put out for them and so many goldfinches feeding from the seeds. That said I seem to spend forever picking up and refilling the containers that the squirrels have managed to unscrew and throw on the floor to eat the contents! I happily feed the squirrels too but prefer them not to try and break into my bird feeders! If you want to buy a bird feeder for a family I highly recommend this Henry Bell squirrel-proof bird feeder £24.99 available to purchase from Food4wildbirds and some seeds, these are Henry Bell superior seeds full of energy for the birds.
This is a great print to buy for a family and reminds them to live for the moment. It is neon sign style print is one of the most popular from Ink and Drop and can be bought in a variety of sizes and from £13 depending on size. It is also available as a canvas if you prefer.
Another great art print is this cheeky twist on the most famous painting in the world, the Mona Lisa! It has drippy gold paint poured down the famous painting making it fun and unusual. This Banksy style urban art print would be great for most families and I think it would look great in a home with toddlers who want to paint everything! The drippy Mona Lisa is available in a variety of sizes and finishes with all different colour paint drips too from Ink and Drop for £13.
